CordaRoy's Bean Bag Care: Clean, Fluff & Extend Its Life
How to Keep Your CordaRoy's Bean Bag Chair Looking Great for Years
If you've read our guide to caring for a cloth sofa's upholstery, you already know that fabric furniture holds up a lot longer with a little regular care. A CordaRoy's convertible bean bag chair asks for the same attention, and then some, since it's also doing duty as a bed for overnight guests. The good news is that keeping one clean, fluffy, and comfortable for years doesn't take much more than a handful of simple habits.
Here's what actually matters.
Check the Fabric Before You Clean
CordaRoy's bean bags come in a range of covers, including corduroy, chenille, faux fur, faux leather, and outdoor fabric, and each one cleans a little differently. Before you reach for a cleaner or toss anything in the wash, look for the care label sewn into the cover. It's the fastest way to avoid a mistake, especially with faux fur and faux leather, which should never be treated like a machine-washable fabric.
Blot Spills Right Away, Don't Scrub
Blot fresh spills with a clean cloth immediately instead of rubbing them in. Rubbing only pushes liquid deeper into the cover and toward the foam underneath, which is much harder to clean. Test any cleaning product on a hidden spot first, and use as little moisture as possible. For everyday dust, crumbs, and pet hair, a vacuum with an upholstery attachment or a lint roller works well on most fabrics.
Wash the Cover, Not the Whole Chair
The outer cover on a CordaRoy's unzips away from the inner bed, and that removable cover is the only part that should ever go into a washing machine. Wash it in cold water on a gentle or delicate cycle, skip the bleach, and tumble dry on low; skip the iron, too. Wash it only when it actually needs it rather than on a set schedule, since frequent washing wears out fabric faster than normal use does.
Leave the Foam and Liner Alone
The inner bed holds the shredded foam that gives a CordaRoy's its shape, and it should never go in a washer or get soaked through. If liquid soaks deep into the foam, it usually means the foam needs replacing rather than cleaning. The waterproof inner liner can be wiped down or washed in cold water, but let it air dry, since machine heat can damage the waterproof layer. If your bean bag doubles as a guest bed, a washable cover or extra blanket adds a layer of protection against spills.
Fluff It Regularly to Keep Its Shape
Like any bean bag, the foam fill compresses with regular use and needs to be redistributed by hand. A quick flip and fluff every so often keeps it from flattening out in one spot. If fluffing doesn't bring the shape back, that's usually the sign it's time to ask about a refill rather than a replacement.
Keep It Out of Direct East Texas Sun
San Augustine summers get hot, and a bean bag chair parked in a sunny window or sunroom for months at a time will fade faster and can break down the cover fabric over time. Keeping it a few feet back from direct sun, or rotating it occasionally, goes a long way toward keeping the color and fabric looking newer, longer.
When to Ask About a Refill, or a New One
A well-made bean bag chair can last for years, but it won't last forever. If yours stays flat no matter how much you fluff it, the cover has tears or escaping filling, or stains and odors won't come out, it's probably past the point cleaning can fix. CordaRoy's backs its bean bags with a lifetime guarantee against manufacturer defects in materials and workmanship, including seams and zippers, so it's worth asking us about your options before assuming you need to start over.
